Through this project, my students will make real connections to their reading about history. Students will be able to add to their background knowledge through the connections of literature and imaginary play with the Playmobil sets. Students will research ancient pyramids, Medieval castles, and pirates by reading from several resources, including the book series "You Wouldn't Want to Be..." and books by David Macaulay on the topics. After researching, student will then write summaries that will incorporate the Playmobil sets to enhance their understanding of what they read. Students will then use the summaries and Playmobil props to present to their classmates and videotape to share with others on our school website. With the literature and Playmobil sets, students will combine their learning with imaginary play to connect to history. Reading and imaginary play will come together to help my young readers apply what they have learned in their reading. For example, after reading about the ancient pyramids of Egypt, students will be able to summarize in writing and role play using the Playmobil sets to demonstrate the new knowledge gained from the nonfiction text. In our world of technology, creative and imaginary play should not be lost. This project will help my students have access to books and play sets that normally would be out of reach for most of my students.
