My school asked each teacher to lead a new club. We are a Tier 1 school with many at risk students. These are inner city students and many of them have had some traumatic experiences. I asked each class to pick some ideas on what would be a good thing to start a club with. Amazingly the majority said photography. We discussed it and I was amazed that even the (so far) quiet students said photography. My students need something to give them something that will motivate and encourage them. These students need a place to be able to express what they are feeling and learn to see their own positives. I have students that I know from last year that have very low self esteem. Many do not want to come to school except for the free lunches. I want this club to get them interested in a hobby that might keep them motivated to come to school. I am a math teacher who loves his job, I love my students, although we have only been with these students one week, I know many from last year. I don't want these kids to lose interest in school. I want them to want to come to school, be interested in something that will grab them and encourage them to come back tomorrow. I want them to start projects and finish them because they want to, not because we are pushing them. I think a photography project would help many students.
