Providing flexible seating will show our students that we respect their right to make their own choices. They will feel more comfortable when learning and may be more productive. As Katherine Kersey and Marie L. Masterson stated, "Children will feel more in control of what is happening to them and more willing to be cooperative when we support their need to feel competent." (101 Principles for Positive Guidance with Young Children, Creating Responsive Teachers, 2009) By donating to our project, you will help our students take some ownership in their learning. The soft seats and comfy floor chairs will be great for students who do not sit well in chairs. They may use them at a lowered table or use trays and clipboards instead if they choose. The wobble chairs are for those students who need a little movement when sitting, similar to fidgeting. The comfy couch will be used in our classroom library providing a comfortable reading area. Students will be able choose to sit where they feel most comfortable.
