My 5th grade students read during every spare moment of their days. I hope for each and every one of my students to learn more about themselves, their communities, and the world through rich and diverse literature that represents their backgrounds. A broader selection in our classroom will increase their intake of words, which will support students in progressing towards their reading goals. The diversity of the books that will fill our library shelves will be a tangible, experiential reminder to my students, who come from historically underrepresented backgrounds, have powerful, meaningful voices and stories. It is my hope that these books will not only broaden and challenge their minds, but also stretch their hearts to believe that they have tremendous potential to make a difference.
