I have recently received a grant from our PTA to purchase a comparative anatomy dissection kit for each of my classes. Each kit includes 2 perch, 2 frogs, 2 dogfish sharks, and 2 fetal pigs. This will allow each class to dissect 8 organisms to not only see the body structures that we are studying, but to also compare those structures among different organisms and relate those differences to their varying environmental pressures. In my 15 years of teaching, I have found that organism dissections are the most anticipated and most engaging portion of any biological science course. Even in non-biological science courses, I have had students ask me if we would be doing dissections. A large portion of our course standards deal with anatomy, and having these dissection tool will allow us to easily provide dissection experiences for hundreds of students in the coming years.
