Girls tend to lose interest in math as early as their pre-teen years. As a first grade teacher I feel it is my responsibility to cultivate a love of math early on in hopes it will give girls a solid foundation to stand on. To be successful in this goal materials are needed to meet students at their individual levels so all students may be learning the same skill yet at their own pace. These materials include various levels of dice, dominoes, and storage for differentiated centers. The students in my classroom need to see themselves represented to feel empowered. To accomplish this goal I find it essential to have equity in the classroom among the boys and girls. Engaging them equally. In addition, most literature does not empower girls or children of color. These books will help bridge that gap. We are an IB school focused on international mindedness and inquiry based learning. The mathematics books will allow for interdisciplinary learning to take place combining literacy skills with math concepts. We learn best when we are comfortable. Florescent lighting can be extremely strenuous on the eyes and mind. These shades will bring warmth to the classroom and dim the harsh glare of the bright lights.
