Our community is surrounded by the largest food growing region in the world. Many of my students come from families that either work in agriculture or for an agriculture-related business. This proposal will help my students get a leg-up on the competition in agricultural drone use, which is in it's infancy in the United States. We need a professional-level drone to give them a skill set for a new and emerging technology. Drones are extremely useful to crop farmers in many ways. Drones can be used to spray crops with pesticides and fertilizers. Drones are also used to monitor abnormal growth patterns in crops. By using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Red Edge (NDRE) sensors, farmers can maximize crop yields. While the drone I am requesting does not have these abilities as standard, it can be upgraded with the appropriate sensors at a later time. Being that the main focus of my proposal is teaching the students how to program and fly a drone for agricultural use, I chose the DJI Mavic Pro because it's operation is nearly identical to it's higher end (and much more expensive) cousins that are used in the field. I also plan to educate my students on the proper usage of drones including FAA requirements for drone registration and Part 107 certification.
