In my Social Studies classroom, geography is constantly embedded into our daily lessons. Often students will use the wall maps or online maps to find the resources they need but they often struggle at this age with the concepts around what happens when you take a spherical object and make it flat. Our current globes are extremely outdated, all (2) of them list the USSR and do not recognize anything past 1988. Additionally, I often find spinning the globe, looking at the globe, helps students focus. A student that is distracted online, loves the hands-on approach to finding the information on the globe. Feeling the earth in their hands opens a new world. They can feel the mountains, see the political boundaries, make connections to learning in other disciples. Recently we read The Long Walk to Water, we struggled to find representations that accurately shows both Sudan and South Sudan. Your funding of this project will allow students to have an updated globe to use in their learning. It will also allow me to keep funding open for other smaller ticket items for next year that are needed in learning. Next year, we have large geography focus to our units and your donation would be incredible!
