In a recent survey of my current students, 80% of my students said they learn well by doing an activity or using technology. 60% said they learn well by seeing visuals or media, and not a single student said he/she learns best auditorily only. The days of lectures are over. Students need their teachers and classrooms to acknowledge that in preparing them for jobs that don't even exist yet, our classrooms need to change with the rest of the world. Technology can help. Students can use laptops in a small group to grow in their 21st century skills of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. Students could collaborate in creating their own videos with the cameras and could blog on course topics via a secure site like edmodo. My journalism students would use the camera and their critical eyes to take more clear photographs, thereby documenting school events and issues in a more meaningful way. They can use online resources to practice grammar, conduct relevant and reliable research with my guidance, write and edit collaboratively, produce yearbook pages, learn digital annotation, and more.
