Please help my students build content background by providing them with high-interest articles and books. Students who come from low socioeconomic areas are not exposed to literacy at the same rate as their same aged peers from higher economic areas. Including words which are spoken and read to them. There is approximately a 30 Million Word Gap between children from lower socioeconomic areas and the middle class by the time these children are three years old, Hart, B. & Risley T. (2003). Providing children with reading material that will fill in the gaps and help develop background knowledge is one piece of the puzzle. Students need connections to understand content areas and make learning relevant. Often background information is all the students need to understand the relevance of content and increase learning and reading interest.
