Most of my students come from very economically challenged homes. English is not the first language in many of them. Due to a language barrier between my students (four language are spoken in my room ) I need to have many hands on activities for my students. These hands on activities allow my children the opportunity to play with each other without using a lot of English. Building blocks also let my children use their hands and their imaginations to create anything they would like. We then can talk about their creations and build their vocabulary. My students also will have the opportunity to share the building blocks with their classmates and take turns. My school is in a very large, depressed urban area and most of my students have very little to play with at home. Preschool is their only opportunity to be able to use a variety of manipulative's. Every child deserves the opportunity to be able to use and explore a variety of toys and be able to use their imaginations.
