Students will have a diverse selection of nonfiction narrative texts to read during class opposed to a single text selected by me for the whole class. Throughout the unit, students will collaborate with a small group reading the same text. The small group, comprised of six or less students, will explore the content through discussion. The ultimate goal of the group is to work together to appropriately and effectively distribute the information that they have learned to different members of the community. They will design the project based on what they feel is appropriate for the audiences they choose target, so I will provide few directions about the “correct” design as it depends on their creativity and problem-solving skills. It’s important for students to use their creativity and problem-solving skills in this capacity because many of them will be assigned such projects by a manager or boss in their future careers. Before each meeting with the group, the students will independently read their selected text. I will model reading strategies appropriate for the genre to the whole class which they can immediately apply to help access their text. While most students will achieve success through this whole class instruction, I believe all students should show growth. Each student will receive one-on-one attention through reading conferences with me that are focused on his/her individual needs.
