In January, we will be doing "Mallet Month" where we will be learning several songs on our Orff instruments. We will also be learning traditional Zimbabwean Marimba songs as a look into another culture's musical traditions. The Orff instruments include xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. Orff instruments offer opportunities for instant success as students get hands-on experience practicing music education fundamentals. Students will use these instruments to work on hand-eye coordination, improvisation, music literacy, and how to be a performer. We are currently a few instruments short of a class set, and waiting for a turn is not as educationally or musically fulfilling as learning on the instrument. This project will fill our class set of barred instruments and provide quality mallets for playing. This will allow every child to be engaged for all of Mallet Month and the rest of the school year.
