By equipping my 4th grade literature circles with the novel WONDER by RJ Palacio, I will help facilitate critical thinking about the impact of human behavior and the importance of choosing to show people kindness, tolerance, and acceptance in our world today. Placing a new #1 bestselling book into a child's hands opens up a world of inspirational learning, sparks interest in reading, and heightens awareness of important social issues. Over 5 million people have read the #1 New York Times bestseller WONDER and have fallen in love with the main character August Pullman, "an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face." It's about a child who looks very different and shows courage in the face of adversity. WONDER inspired the #ChooseKind movement and it can inspire my students to be more compassionate toward others. My classes will take the pledge to participate in the Kindness Challenge as a Certified Kind Class. The book is currently being made into a motion picture to be released this Nov. (and if my project is funded, I hope to bring the classes on a field trip to the movie theater as well!!!) The Buzz: "'Wonder is the best kids' book of the year,' said Emily Bazelon, author of Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character & Empathy. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. RJ Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness” —indeed, every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of Auggie." As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Intelligence plus character: that is the goal of true education." Please help me plant the seeds of knowledge and kindness in my classroom. Thank you!
