Our county can be characterized by its extremely rural landscape and relatively large geographic area when compared to other counties in our state. The sparse population of just over 10,000 residents is scattered throughout the heavily wooded Appalachian foothills. Our rural status does not diminish the students' zest for learning. Our school is the only middle school in the county. In the course of the year, every student in the school rotates through the computer classroom. The students are a heterogeneous mix of abilities, personalities and socio-economic status. My classes have 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who burst into the room, grab their portfolios and plunk down in front of a computer screen eager to continue their activities from the day before. The students learn basic computer skills, explore career options, study Spanish, literature, and math.
