Kids are kids! I think adults seem to forget that at times. They need to wiggle. They need to move. They need to have choices. I encourage my students to listen to their bodies. To recognize If they learn better standing up, with a wiggle seat, on the floor instead of at a desk, etc. Classrooms don't (and shouldn't) look the same as they did 70 years ago. They are evolving. Our kiddos don't know life without constant connectivity, wi-fi, and a global audience. Outside our classrooms is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world--full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make choices for them? I want a classroom environment that is conducive to collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Flexible seating is one key element to help reach/continue this view It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Research shows that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. Evolving the classroom space to meet students’ individual needs impacts how they learn, interact, and their entire classroom experience.
