I work at a small charter school in an impoverished neighborhood. Schools in the area have scored quite low on testing in the past few years which has more and more parents trying to get their children into charter schools. Our K-8 school is a good option for busy parents who can drop off all of their children at once. Many of our students come from low-income families and from diverse backgrounds. In my seventh grade students alone I know of at least 5 different languages spoken in their homes. This diversity among the students is both a blessing and a curse. We have the opportunity to talk about culture, and race, as well as acceptance, and respect. These discussions and debates are the highlights of my teaching career.
