My first graders are vivacious, imaginative, and spontaneous. We are an eclectic group of ethnicities and family dynamics living in the inner city of New York. Most students come from meager means and are overcoming heartbreaking challenges. In our classroom, though, we come together and learn to appreciate differences. Literature is a great tool for this. Our school strives to provide everyone with safe, nurturing environments equipped with many tools for academic success. Some of these tools, however, are outdated. Replacing them has become more challenging in this economic environment.
