These materials will make a difference in my students' learning by showing them who they can be and letting them know they are not alone in the world. My students deserve opportunities to see themselves in the literature they read, and to learn about others. Currently, we do not have enough books with diverse characters written by diverse authors. The few books that we have from authors like Andrea Davis Pickney, Jason Reynolds, Nikki Grimes, Grace Lin and others are student favorites. They are books that students talk about during recess, and lunch. The books they secretly read at night under the covers after the lights go out. The books that take them away from their current situation or problem. My students deserve diverse books that align with their dreams, and that capture their hearts. Having access to more books will further the achievement in my classroom and cultivate a reading community. They will be able to discuss literary characters, read series, and use their texts to enhance their own writing.
