As English Language Learners my students are not only learning letters, sounds, and words, they are also learning about our culture. "What do they mean by that?" is a question that might be heard each hour. My students want to read and learn about their new country. Many topics or ideas that we assume everyone knows about, are totally new to my students. Scholastic News presents a variety of topics and has images, maps, and graphs that would enhance my students' learning about our country and culture, while learning to read. I was recently able to get a few copies of the Scholastic News with the story about current toy "fads". My students learned so many vocabulary words and figures of speech from that articles! They really connected to the article because several of them had a fidget spinner or made the slime. It was so cool to see their faces light up when we read the article.
