Students love to play games and be creative using manipulatives. By using these things in my math class, I believe students will be actively engaged and therefore understand and remember the math concepts involved. I want to get away from paper and ipads on occasion and let students know that math can still be fun. At our school, we believe in the philosophy that "All Kids Are Capable of Success." As the 5th grade math teacher, my hope is to help them be successful in this academic area. There are two specific 5th grade math standards targeted in this project. One is to classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties, and the second is to write and interpret numerical expressions. I will use The Equation Thinking Game to allow students practice in creating and solving math expressions and equations. This game will allow for student interaction in their learning and provide a method that gets away from the routine of paper or ipad learning. Additionally, the students will be able to build two dimensional figures with the Magna Tiles. This will help them understand and learn the properties of 2 dimensional shapes. Students love to learn by using their hands. By having these sets of Magna Tiles, I will have enough for all students to use so they can explore and create 2 dimensional shapes. I believe the game and manipulatives will support student learning in my classroom. I'm excited about the possibility of using these items to enhance my math lessons.
