I teach at-risk youth in Phoenix, Oregon. As a public charter, we are an alternative for our students, for whom the mainstream school model doesn't work. This year, I'm teaching courses in Media Literacy and Creative Writing. With an emphasis on current events, bookmaking and zine-design, blogging, and independent reading projects, our language arts curriculum is designed to be engaging and meaningful instruction in real-world language and publishing skills. We strive to give our students options and flexibility, in order to support their education - whatever form that may take.
