My school is located in a high poverty section in the city of Philadelphia. My students have to walk through rough streets to get to school and their lives at home may not always be the best. Despite this, my first graders come to school everyday excited and ready to learn! They know that our classroom is a safe and welcoming place. They love walking into their bright classroom and are eager to try new things everyday. First grade is an important year of growth as a reader and writer. My students enjoy spending time in the classroom library and choosing their own books to read independently. They also love writing their own stories to share with each other.
