This year our students will be tasked with tackling a new science core focused on understanding phenomena in the world around them using the scientific method and engineering process. Students will begin to gain a conceptual knowledge of life and matter on the smallest level by manipulating models of molecules by constructing common compounds like H2O. Then, they will be diving into the hands-on activities that explore genetics that will allow them to construct pedigrees, predict a genetic disease, and profile trait frequency in populations. Next, they will move on to growing microorganisms in petri dishes to test environments in which they thrive, and will then use their newly gained knowledge to gather water samples and engineer their own water filters to treat water tainted with harmful microbes. Using the PH testing strips will allow them to test their water sample after using the filter prototypes they build including found materials and the charcoal we have requested. Finally, they will determine a successful design, or a need to redesign and continue working. Additionally, they will discover how weather systems form and how to predict the weather using models they create based on the text sets they read from our requested items, and using the weather instruments to gather and interpret real data outside our school. Without hands-on materials, students do not grow a love for science and foster their natural inquisitiveness. By donating materials, you are starting or kindling a love for science that will help our students be creative problem solvers and critical thinkers, if not scientists and engineers.
