During my very first year of teaching, I fell in love with the first grade year. These 6 and 7-year-olds are inspirational, bright, and are such motivated learners. Throughout my first year of teaching, I was able to implement many flexible seating options including yoga balls, seat cushions, yoga mats, and stability stools...using my own funds. I did many DIY activities including creating my very own crate seats. Upon reflection of my first year of teaching, I was able to recognize how flexible seating had such a large impact on our classroom community. Flexible seating allows the students the choice to select a spot. By providing them with the control to decide upon a spot in the classroom, it provides them with the empowerment that they control their own learning (such a powerful tool). I was also able to witness the benefits of flexible seating for the movement that these young learners needed so very much. The stability balls allow for that extra movement to suit each student's individual needs. One of the greatest impacts of flexible seating within our classroom was the sense of community that the seating options provided for our classroom family. My students were able to share resources and spaces, an essential skill needed throughout their lifetime. If I am able to receive the Gaiam Kids Balance Ball Chairs, I will be able to more completely implement the positive benefits of flexible seating within my classroom. These chairs will allow for movement at the small group table to keep these young minds learning. The positive benefits will impact my current and future students. These resources will continue to create a comfortable and inclusive classroom environment that allows for each and every child's needs be met.
