“Education is evolving due to the impact of the Internet. We cannot teach our students in the same manner in which we were taught. Change is necessary to engage students not in the curriculum we are responsible for teaching, but in school. Period.” – April Chamberlain Not only is technology a necessary tool in today’s classroom, but it makes the knowledge acquisition more captivating for students. I teach all subjects in fifth grade, including our advanced learners. My students are eager to learn technology. Due to living in a rural area in southern Idaho, some of my students do not have access to a computer or Internet to be able to do all their online research, word processing, or homework using Khan Academy or Ready Math. I need to teach my students computer skills to help them with basic word processing needs, spreadsheets, slides and Power Points. Our school, Silver Trail Elementary School, is a full inclusion, kindergarten through sixth grade school with extended resource, special education and advanced learners. With very little industry or large businesses to enhance our tax base for levies and bonds, our district relies on our homeowners for supporting our curriculum and programs. We have a large population of free or reduced price lunches. Our administrative staff supports us in any way they can, but they cannot create the budget to allow for more than four computers in the classroom. I would love to support my team of students with five of the requested HP Chromebooks as a mini station in our classroom. Students will use them for math practice and enrichment with Khan Academy, Accelerated Math and Ready Math. They will be able to research topics for informative and argumentative writing and prepare for middle school electronic portfolio presentations. We will tackle technology together.
