For many of our students to be successful they need appropriate interventions. When these are in place students can succeed in the classroom. With these tools I can help fellow teachers create learning environments where all students can be successful. When teachers don't have the skills necessary to work with all students, students experience poor learning outcomes and removal from the classroom and/or school. In the Seattle School District, students with identified disabilities receive approximately 50% of all disciplinary actions. I am hoping with these materials I can at least make a positive change in the school I work in. In my DonorsChoose.org project, am asking for books to help guide our staff to create better interventions and environment at Van Asselt, especially for our students with disabilities. The Pre-Referral Intervention Manual would allow teachers to create supports so that students can learn in the classroom. By giving educators and students the tools needed, the entire school can be successful. The Wrightlaw: Special Education will help ensure that each student with a disability has their civil rights and due process respected. This is especially important for our school since many families here do not know what their rights are and how to ensure their students receive a truly free and appropriate public education. "I Won't Learn From You" is a tool for teachers to develop their skills working with this population. Many of our staff do not share the same experience as our students. We must put the time and energy into developing an understanding of our students. Without this, we will not be able to reach our students.
