In a system that so regularly scripts the educational experience for all students, student choice and autonomy has become an increasingly vital component of a school's purpose to develop motivated, independent, and responsible citizens. My students love being able to select a new seat choice every day. By giving them the opportunity to choose a different location or workspace in our classroom, students are taking charge of their own learning. We currently have lap desks, carpets with clipboards, donut balls, a stool and standing table, a picnic table and a low table. When students feel comfortable during their independent work times they are highly engaged and motivated to complete their tasks. I would love to continue adding new and exciting choices such as cushions for our low table, wobble stools for our standard tables and a round table into our mix. These materials would be highly beneficial in allowing students to choose a seat that is comfortable and allows for movement. . Since many of my students come to school with adverse childhood experiences, it is my main priority to provide students with a classroom community that is aware and supportive of their individual needs. One of the biggest needs we have seen for our students is purposeful play. Now more than ever students are lacking the skills to effectively communicate, problem-solve, and regulate their emotions. Through dramatic and purposeful play, students are given the opportunity to have these experiences in a low risk high reward environment.
