During the times of online learning due to Covid-19 students faced an unprecedented amount of stress. Now that we are back in the classroom, those outside stresses have not diminished, they have been exacerbated. It is our job as educators to create a classroom that allows students to take a deep breath and know that they are safe and in a peaceful space. With these resources, I can do just that.
In my list, I am asking for furniture and supplemental items that I can use to create a calming corner. When students are overwhelmed, they can go to the calming corner and take a break. I'm also asking for materials to create and organize a space filled with soft lighting and soothing scents, where students can use creativity to soothe their restless minds. According to https://www.beaumont.org, "Coloring has the ability to relax the fear center of your brain, the amygdala. It induces the same state as meditating by reducing the thoughts of a restless mind." Students will be able to use this space for short moments of time where they may need to reset from the stress of everyday life around them. The organization resources I've requested will make this a peaceful, neat space for them to take the mental break they may need.
