The hardest part about teaching students about people and cultures different from their own is exposing them to shared experiences that they can use to identify with them. If they are able to visualize clear examples of what people of other cultures experience and how they use their culture to shape their response to various situations, they can identify and compare those examples to their own lives. Ms Marvel is a fantastic way to expose students to a positive depiction of Muslim Americans without being overly preachy. It allows them to identify similarities between the main character and themselves through a format that many students do not identify with in-class learning: comic books. And as members of an often-misunderstood religion themselves, many students in my class will be able to relate to the main character's struggle to balance her parents' traditional expectations for her with her own desire to be "normal" and fit in with her peers.
