I teach the second half of Western Civilizations. George Orwell's book, 1984, changed the way I saw the world. The discussions we have every week challenge my scholars to reevaluate their understanding of life: right and wrong, justice and mercy, and what it means to be human. The lessons and warnings they encounter while reading and discussing 1984 will stay with them throughout the rest of their lives, totalitarian regimes, humanity's inhumanity to man, the role of government in the lives of citizens, and the need to balance freedom and responsibility. Last year we gave a copy to every 10th grader, but statewide budget cuts are depriving my scholars of a book that colors every unit we cover throughout the entire year. A class set of 1984 will ensure that every child that comes through my classroom has access to this important text.
