93% of our students are minority/ non-white (of that, 85% are Hispanic). And 95% are economically disadvantaged. The students in my class are genuinely good hearted people who work hard and want to please. They are respectful and love learning. They will run to my class in the morning, and give me a hug when they walk in the door. Many are learning English as a second language at the same time as learning 5th grade academic standards. However, because many are economically disadvantaged, they don't have as many experiences as a student who has a more affluent background. Additionally, because they are learning English, they will struggle with common vocabulary, as well as slang and idioms in the English language.
