As an alternative school for at-risk teen, my school's main focus is academics. I have heard from the majority that although they like it at The NET, they don't feel as though they get the full high school experience because we have no sports team. With this volleyball equipment (outdoor net, balls, and a cooler for the hot Louisiana summer) we can give them the opportunity to be outdoors getting some exercise while also teaching them the value of teamwork and fairness. They will also benefit be learning to play a leisure sport that they can participate in throughout their lives. I believe that given the opportunity to play volleyball, they will feel a sense of camaraderie and belonging. It's perfect because they don't have to be super-athletes in order to feel like they are part of a team. Our students come from very difficult home situations and they often choose unhealthy and dangerous ways to overcome stress and boredom. I believe that this project will help them make a healthy choice and give them something to do after school.
