The county in which I teach is a small, rural area in the Appalachian Mountains, and most of my students have lived in this particular county for their entire lives. While this experience creates a tight-knit community and generates genuine Southern hospitality, many of my students have never experienced cultural diversity or ideas outside of their own upbringing. To say that they experience culture shock when they first travel to another area or go off to college is an understatement. Similarly, there is not much cultural diversity displayed in most of the "classic" novels we have available at this school.
