"Everyone is a reader, some just haven't found their favorite book yet." This is a quote I firmly believe it, so much so I have it posted in my classroom. My classroom library is in need of a makeover, as the majority of the books I inherited aren't terribly engaging to students in 2020. The goal of this project is to help some of my students discover their favorite book, while supporting others who already consider themselves readers. The books selected are both for students to read independently but there are some for me to use as (interactive) read alouds. There were three specific things I was looking for when selecting books for this project and they were: strong characters and storylines for struggling readers (boys in particular), books with diverse characters, and picture books celebrating diversity, STEM, and women's empowerment. Although time will tell what my school district decides to do for learning this coming school year, one thing is certain: students need engaging books to read, (especially when they are reading at home), and the importance, and power, of a read aloud has become more apparent. As a teacher I push myself to help my students become global citizens when they leave "the Nest"; with everything going on in our current world this is more important than ever, and one of the best ways to make this goal a reality is through literature. Help me make this goal a reality.
