We live in a high-need community, in one of the poorest states in the United States. The county we live in is the poorest social-economic county in the state. This area is very much lacking in cultural awareness. I teach French to students in grades 8-12. In order to keep these kids motivated, I like to have them do some hands-on activities by researching recipes to cook and and get to try out foods that are eaten in francophone countries around the world. They look forward to our one-day per month cooking day. It's exciting to see how every student lights up on these days. They LOVE doing the search for recipes, and preparing and eating these foods. They are all very involved and learn to work together for a common goal. Most parents in this area would not have the resources to afford their kids this opportunity at home.
