My students will benefit from this project as it will create more opportunities for a multisensory approach to learning, which has been proven to improve understanding among students in special education. The materials provided by this project will allow my students to connect physically with the numbers and interact with them in a way they have not been able to in the regular education classroom. By using the play dough and kinetic sand, they can mold the numbers and feel how they should be written. The beads, pipe cleaners, pom poms, googly eyes, etc. will allow them to physically count out numbers and manipulate them to represent addition and subtraction in a way that is concrete. The additional supplies will assist my students to create math projects in colorful and unique ways that will help cement a firmer connection to long term memory.
