Imagine moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day. I teach at a Title I school in Pennsylvania where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. Even thought Mathematics is its own universal language, the language barrier between teachers and students makes things very difficult. The majority of my students have come from Central American countries, and from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.
