Its time to break outside of the traditional books we all have read and seen. They don't always reflect the students in the classroom or its really difficult to make a connection. Students need to read stories they can make a connection to and be encouraged to embrace diversity. I love hearing the students talking about their connections and how they have had similar experiences. Books such as, Alma and How She Got Her Name, takes readers into a different culture and how name and origin can be connected. I have students with family names and hyphenated names that will find great pleasure reading a book like this.
