Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at our page. I am a middle school dyslexia teacher in the Dallas suburbs. My students are learning to read through the Take Flight program designed, researched, and created by Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. This is an intensive curriculum teaching decoding and spelling skills through multisensory instruction. You can help my students discover a love for reading. The books requested are a required part of the Take Flight curriculum used to teach comprehension skills. These comprehension lessons occur on Fridays and are the highlight of the week! Monday-Friday the lessons are therapeutic and directly teach letter-sound correlations and spelling patterns. Our students work very hard to learn the basic decoding skills of reading, but applying them to real-life books is when they can bring it all together. My students usually find reading frustrating and defeating, but these books are engaging and on their reading levels. Unfortunately, these books are not included in the curriculum materials, and all of the teachers share them at my school. Most of them are over 10 years old and have seen better days. For those who may not know, dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. Dyslexics need to learn reading in a different way than most students. It is critical that dyslexic students receive intervention early on in their education, and my students are already at risk because they are already in middle school. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of these wonderful kids. They will love to read their brand new books selected just for them.
