The students in my county are caring and hard-working, but they lack exposure to people of diverse cultures and experiences. They have few opportunities to interact with native speakers on a day-to-day basis. My students also need resources that will allow them to see the language in context, which greatly improves acquisition. Books like these allow my students to experience voices other than their own, to step outside the world they know for a few minutes. These books were chosen to appeal to students who have different skill levels and interests. El Escape Cubano tells the story of a young teen whose father wants to escape Cuba and will be used as a whole-class novel. The language is simple, but the content is complex and will allow the students to explore various aspects of history and the ties to current events. The other novels will be used for independent reading to improve vocabulary acquisition.
