This project includes a variety of STEM related books. One of the books, Ticktock Banneker's Clock, by Shana Keller, is the story of young Benjamin Keller and how he deconstructed a pocket watch to understand the working of the gears inside. He then created a mantel clock based on the same principles. After reading the book, students will create their own gears to understand how size, ratio and arrangement of gears affect speed. This is just one of the many hands-on projects students will participate in after reading a STEM related picture book.
