We at my school are opening a new library space and we are in need of some books. My students are all English Language Learners from Somalia. They really love graphic novels. I have a wide selection of books from both fiction and nonfiction lists. Last school year, the original library increased its cache of graphic novels by 75 books and readership went up nearly 25% each term. That compounded itself every term thereafter. As more graphic novels were added, readership went up. The school library is, for most students, about the only outlet they can easily access to get reading materials. Having a well stocked library with books they are interested in is key to getting young readers hooked on reading.
