My students sit in plastic chairs in my classroom for 6 out of 7 periods in a school day. A reading area with bean bag chairs provides an inviting and comfortable area for the students to learn. I feel that sometimes schools can feel like a prison rather than an inviting environment to learn new skills. This reading nook will also provide sensory input for some of the students who require stimulation other than the typical academic curriculum. Students will be able to earn special time to complete a task or lesson in the reading nook. Small group instruction will occur in this area, which will encourage a relaxed atmosphere. The bean bag chairs and the bungee chairs are more comfortable than the plastic chairs they sit in all day. The rug provides a "home like" atmosphere and an area of the classroom that feels more inviting than a desk and a plastic chair. Students will also sit in the bungee chair for sensory stimulation. I have students who require stimulation and bouncing in the chairs will allow them to refocus. The pillows will be used to enhance the inviting environment of the nook. The pillows will also be used for students to sit on. The bean bags and bungee chairs will be used to create a relaxing environment for the students. The rug in the classroom will be used to create a defined area where students can read. The chairs and rug will be used for students who are overstimulated and need to decompress for a few minutes. The rug, chairs, and pillows provide a multio Donating to this project is donating to students whose needs are unique and will enhance the learning environment of students who are in a self-contained classroom for the majority of the school day.
