Although I teach history, I regularly integrate literacy skills and resources to my lessons. We also practice many problem-based learning strategies. This practice has proven to increase students' success in their reading comprehension and scores on various state mandated tests. Problem-based learning is integral to students developing life skills for college and the workplace. I am using graphic novels to spark the interests of my students and engage their creativity. Having my classes write a graphic novel will be used to enhance their reading, writing, and problem-solving skills. At the end of each unit, the students are presented with a real world problem to address and develop a solution. They will present their information through the creation of a graphic comic book novel. The materials requested will be used to give the students' work the look of an authentic book and it will instill pride in their work.
