Currently in our first grade classroom we do majority of our learning at the carpet together. This includes reading stories together, singing songs, practicing math with white boards on our laps, and so much more. The carpet in the class is over 50 years old, and held together in areas with duct tape. I have used masking tape on the floor to create individual squares for students so that they may have their own space, and also as a management tool. As you my suspect, this is not a great solution. Over time the tape looses its stick, and little hands do love to pick at the tape (can you blame them?). By having a new classroom rug in our class, it will not only provide some extra comfort, but due to the size and structure it will also improve our classroom environment. It will look and feel cleaner and allow students to focus a little better on learning. I will be able to pull up the tape for good (yay!) since there are 30 individual "squares" on the rug; one for each student.
