The class set of books I am requesting, The Struggle for Black Equality, are books that will assist in the in-depth study of the civil rights movement. The students in this course crave knowing more about the past, but so little of what they consume in the media and on social networks answer their heart-felt questions. Especially in today's toxic climate of racial disharmony, particularly in the wake of the tragedy in Charlottesville, VA, it is more incumbent for teachers to discuss institutional racism and the history that preceded it, focusing intently on the Jim Crow era and the civil rights movement it inspired. These college level books will afford college-bound students an opportunity to get a leg up on the study of history.
