We will use The Outsiders and a mock trial to explore the essential question: 1. "How do our choices impact our communities?" In this project, we will read a novel about a group of young people who find themselves at the center of a crime. Each character makes choices that impact what happens, but how do we decide who is to blame? In this project, my group of performing arts students will play the role of "judges," prosecuting the characters of the novel. Throughout our reading, they will 1.Be in charge of closely examining one character's development throughout the book, and then 2. Will write a paragraph analyzing how the character developed over time in the text. Then, students will act as lawyers, writing legal briefs to defend their client or prosecute the suspect. They will here utilize their English skills such as argumentative claims, selection of evidence and conventions. Finally, they will engage in a mock trial with their peers.
