In cooperation with the West Indian Dance Theatre Company, dance students will experience professionalism and culture, build confidence, fortitude and performance readiness, all in the spirit of dance. Students will take part in the rehearsal and technical cycle that a dance company goes through in preparation for a company produced performance. They will participate in learning and perfecting dance repertoire and building a sense of community with the dance company members. The West Indian Dance Theatre Company runs itself and is established on the social, cultural and health based philanthropy in the community where it lives. My plan is to purchase the costumes and materials for my Level 3 and Level 4 students so that the will be able to participate in this experience. They will be working with this professional cultural dance company to learn from the company dancers all that comes with an apprentice opportunity. This experience will afford a glimpse into the professional world of training and performance while being submerged in the ethnicity of culture and community. In cultural dance, wearing the traditional costumes is extremely important in the presentation of the dance. The physical expression of movement coupled with the traditional costume brings together the overall aesthetic quality of the dance. Additionally, the costume is the first thing that captures the attention of the audience, thereby drawing it to the dancer's appearance. Having the students wear the traditional costumes supports genuine artistic expression. The costume is not just an outfit; it is an integral part of the dance. Wearing the traditional costume will make my students feel special and a part of the community.
