My students relate to novels that involve characters who struggle to get beyond their circumstances and achieve great things. Katniss Everdeen, in The Hunger Games series does that for my students. When my students are engaged, they learn and participate at a higher rate. Students at all grade levels relate to Katniss and her struggle to feed and take care of her family. They understand Katniss and her motivation and through this begin to understand the elements in the novel that are common to all novels. Their engagement motivates them to learn. Reading Catching Fire will continue this classroom engagement.
